Clothier Bottling Works

1915—19??

Clothier Bottling Works first appears in the 1915 Dun & Bradstreet. The base of the aqua Clothier Bottling Works bottle has a B (with serif), and a “1” below it. This B indicates it was manufactured by the Brockway Glass Company, allowing us to date it between 1925 and 1934. The example with the circle slug plate and the diamonds around its neck is, I believe, a ROOT glass company mold that dates to the late 1910s.

Clothier Bottling Works is noted to be an unincorporated branch of Nunnenkamp’s Meat Market, and disappears after 1921, though Nunnenkamp continues and from 1922 beyond is listed as a bottler. In other words, Clothier Bottling Works continued past its listings in Dun & Bradstreet, both evidenced by the relisting of Nunnenkamp as a bottler and the aqua bottle dating between 1925 and 1934. I am unsure as to when it officially closed, but I suspect it was another victim of the Great Depression as with many other bottlers.

The only clue we receive for dating this bottle is the “O” in a square on the base. This is an early Owens-Illinois Glass Company manufacturer mark, dating from 1919—1929. The code to the left of the symbol indicates this particular bottle was made in 1927.
